Tips for a natural detoxication

Our bodies have a natural in-built detox system (the digestive tract, the urinary system, and the liver) that helps process all the chemicals modern life throws at it.

These chemicals are called 'toxins' - they are poisonous that have harmful effects on your body. Unfortunately, it's not just alcohol and tobacco that are loaded with toxins; pesticides and food additives, caffeine, and air pollution all play their part, too. Luckily, there are some ways to naturally boost your system's ability to deal with toxins and detox your body and mind.

What can you do?

1) Drink more water

This may come as an unnecessary tip, but we are unfortunately constantly forgetting about our daily water intake! The first step to boost natural detoxification is simple. Make sure you drink enough water (approximately around eight glasses per day). Drinking enough water is more than not feeling thirsty - it regulates your body temperature, lubricates joints, aids digestion, and nutrient absorption, and detoxifies your body by removing waste products.

A quick tip: start your day with a glass of water with some lemon juice for an instant energy boost, and cut down on the caffeine.

2) Pay attention to what you eat

Cutting down on refined sugar and processed foods is essential for any detox diet or program. Switching to naturally sweet foods such as fresh fruits and honey will do wonders for your body and soul. By replacing sugary, sparkling drinks with freshly squeezed fruit/veggie juices or smoothies will fasten up your body's natural detoxification. A salad is always a great idea; you can make it a complete meal by adding healthy fats and protein. Cutting down on alcohol and smoking is essential! If you are struggling to quit, and it's getting harder to do it alone, make sure you talk to your health provider for some advice on making it easier for yourself.

Tip: The most popular detox-friendly veggies are kale, coriander, and spinach. You can add them to your smoothies in combination with fruits for a healthy on-the-go drink or breakfast.

3) Detox your mind too

Constant stress triggers the release of cortisol, a hormone that has been linked to several negative impacts on your health. They include weight gain, increased blood pressure, high cholesterol, and heart disease. Relaxing your body and your mind is very important for overall detoxification. Yoga and meditation are proven to be very relaxing for both the mind and body. If you are constantly busy, you can always listen to some guided meditation on the go; it will help you calm your nerves and relax easily. Music is also a good choice. Sit in your favorite chair, get some tea and blast a tune that makes you feel like there's not a single worry in the world!

Bonus tip: If you are an organized person but struggle with keeping everything in order, try journaling. It is creative, relaxing and you will have all your plans, lists, and tasks in the same place, so next time you can't remember something, all you have to do is check your journal.

4) Get that blood flowing

Moderate exercising helps your body in numerous ways! Physical activity increases circulation and encourages blood flow, which stimulates your liver and digestive system. That leads to speeding up the process of toxin removal from your bloodstream. If you spend a lot of time sitting in the office, try stretching every half hour to move those muscles around.

Reminder: exercise helps the release of dopamine and endorphins and also lowers your levels of stress hormones

5) Sleep

Sleeping recharges your brain and also rests the body from everyday stress. In addition, by having enough (and quality!) sleep, you are helping to remove toxic waste byproducts that have accumulated throughout the day.

If you are having trouble falling asleep, try shutting down all of your devices, such as mobile phones, laptops, and TVs, at least an hour before you go to bed. Reading some light literature will help you relax and fall asleep sooner. A cup of herbal tea or a warm bath are great and easy ways to relax and 'shut down your brain before sleeping.

A quick tip: Valerian root is believed to help you fall asleep easier and faster. Make sure you take proper doses recommended by your doctor or pharmacist.
