Proteins

Did you know?

The protein molecules are so versatile, numerous, and capable that people were convinced (at least until the mid-20th century) that they are responsible for transferring genetic information from one generation to another?

Nobody even considered DNA molecules, and they seemed too simple. Nevertheless, the modest DNA got its credit for carrying our genetic code around, but let's not forget about the mighty biomolecules that keep us alive 24/7...

So, what do they do in our bodies?

The DNA says what needs to be done, but proteins do it. So, is something going on in our body or the environment? No problem, signaling proteins are already alarming everyone else. Do the fancy collagen/keratin/elastin titles on cosmetic products seem familiar?

Complex processes like digestion are orchestrated by enzymes. But enzymes are proteins too.

If we strive for a body & mind balance, we need to increase the intake of our building blocks.

Vegan, paleo, keto, organic, raw? Whatever your preferred diet type is, there is a good protein source or an alternative.

Protein-rich foods keep you satiated for a more extended period, actively participate in tissue repair, stabilize hormone status, and contribute to your overall immune response.

In Numbers

  • The human body can produce 80-400 thousand protein molecules.

Protein consists of up to 22 amino acids: 9 are essential, which means we cannot produce them; they are diet-dependent.

WHO recommendations

The general WHO recommendation for a sedentary adult daily intake is at least 0.8g of lean protein per kilogram of body weight, but it varies on gender, age, lifestyle, activity level...
