Food for good mood

Most of us don't regularly connect the food we eat and how we feel, which is a common mistake. Instead, our digestive system is lined with millions of nerves, known as a 'second brain.'

When you look at it like that, you will probably remember how many times you felt stomach discomfort when you are in a mentally tense or uncomfortable situation. That is because your digestive system is very connected to your brain! This may come as a surprise, but significant amounts of serotonin, known as the 'good mood' hormone, are located in your gut. So, what do we learn from this? It is simple - by eating the right foods, you can easily make yourself feel good!

Smart food choices for mood-boosting

1) Omega-3 fats

Eating fatty fish such as salmon will help you get your dose of omega-3 fats, which your body naturally doesn't provide. Having salmon or tuna 2-3 times a week will grant your body and mind the powerful omega 3 acids. It is believed to be good for your brain and mood, as there is some evidence supporting its positive effects on depression.

Tip: if you don't like fish, or you eat a plant-based diet, flax seeds, chia, and walnuts are also great, as they are rich in omega-3 fats. Flax seeds and chia can be an extra addition to your breakfast smoothie or oatmeal, and walnuts are yummy in salads. There is also a variety of omega-3 supplements, which you can get in consultation with your doctor.

2) Dark berries

Apart from being very tasty, dark berries are rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals, which are great for fighting the imbalance of harmful compounds in your body. Strawberries, blackberries, and blueberries are incredibly healthy and tasty snacks, and they will provide you with much-needed antioxidants.

Bonus tip: if you don't like snacking on fruits alone, try adding a handful to your smoothies or overnight oats. You can also buy frozen ones if you can't get fresh ones. It works great for summer weather; just add some frozen berries to your smoothie for an instant cold healthy beverage!

3) Dark chocolate

It is believed that chocolate, especially the dark kind, has a 'mood booster' written all over it. By consuming chocolate that is very hedonistically pleasant to do, you are ingesting health-promoting flavonoids known to reduce inflammation, increase blood flow in your brain, and boost overall brain health.

Tip: as milk chocolate has additions such as milk and sugar, your best option is dark chocolate (with min. 70% cocoa), but be careful with the amount as it is high-calorie.

4) Foods with probiotics

Eating healthy foods with probiotic properties makes sure your stomach gets the healthy bacteria needed to function correctly. In addition, by making your tummy happy, you are also making your brain happy. The most popular probiotic foods are yogurt, kefir, soft cheeses, and fermented goods such as sauerkraut, kimchi, and pickles.

Tip: Probiotic foods fasten the natural elimination of toxins from your body, so be careful not to overeat, as it might have a bit of a laxative effect.
